बहवः साधवो लोके युक्ता धर्मम् अनुष्टिताः ।
परेषाम् अपराधेन विनष्टाः स परिच्छदाः ॥३-३९-२१॥
bahavaḥ sādhavo loke yuktā dharmam anuṣṭitāḥ |
pareṣām aparādhena vinaṣṭāḥ sa paricchadāḥ ॥3-39-21॥
Translation
Many saintly people in this world, engaged in the practice of Dharma and united with virtue, have perished along with their kinsmen due to the offenses committed by others.

संसार में ऐसे बहुत से साधु स्वभाव वाले तथा धर्म के पालन में लगे रहने वाले लोग हैं, जो दूसरों के अपराधों के कारण अपने परिवार और अनुचरों सहित नष्ट हो गए हैं।
English Commentary
Maricha articulates a profound ethical observation (Niti) here regarding the consequences of association. He warns Ravana that often, innocent and righteous individuals, despite adhering to Dharma, face destruction due to the sins of those they associate with. This reflects the concept of collateral damage caused by bad company. While Maricha may not be claiming saintliness for himself, he highlights a universal truth: the sins of a leader or a powerful individual often result in the annihilation of their followers and kin. He implies that Ravana's obstinacy and unrighteousness act as a contagion that will doom not just Ravana, but the entire Rakshasa race and reluctant participants like Maricha. It is a desperate plea based on the logic of collective consequence.

मारीच यहाँ एक महत्वपूर्ण नीति वचन कह रहा है, जो 'सत्संग' और 'कुसंग' के प्रभाव को दर्शाता है। वह रावण को समझा रहा है कि एक पापी व्यक्ति का साथ देने से निरपराध और धर्मात्मा व्यक्ति भी विनाश को प्राप्त होते हैं। यह 'संसर्गजा दोषगुणा भवन्ति' (संगति से ही दोष और गुण उत्पन्न होते हैं) के सिद्धांत का विस्तार है। मारीच स्वयं को उन 'साधुओं' की श्रेणी में नहीं रख रहा, अपितु वह एक सामान्य सत्य बता रहा है कि नेतृत्व की गलती का खामियाजा अनुचरों को भुगतना पड़ता है। रावण के अधर्म और हठ के कारण न केवल रावण, बल्कि पूरा राक्षस कुल और मारीच जैसे लोग, जो युद्ध नहीं चाहते, वे भी मारे जाएंगे। यह एक कूटनीतिक चेतावनी है कि रावण का पाप संक्रामक है और वह अन्यों को भी ले डूबेगा।
