Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सः अहम् पर अपराधेन विनाशेयम् निशाचर ।
कुरु यत् ते क्षमम् तत् त्वम् अहम् त्वाम् न अनुयामि वै ॥३-३९-२२॥
saḥ aham para aparādhena vināśeyam niśācara |
kuru yat te kṣamam tat tvam aham tvām na anuyāmi vai ॥3-39-22॥
Translation
O Night-ranger (Ravana), I, being such a one, will be destroyed by another's offense. Do whatever you deem appropriate; I certainly will not follow you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे निशाचर! दूसरों (तुम्हारे) के अपराध से मैं भी मारा जाऊँगा। अत: जो तुम्हें उचित जान पड़े, वह तुम करो; मैं तो तुम्हारे पीछे नहीं चलूँगा।
English Commentary
Applying the logic of the previous verse to himself, Maricha explicitly states that he faces destruction due to Ravana's offense. Here, Maricha's resistance reaches its peak; he summons the courage to refuse his King's command directly. The declaration "I certainly will not follow you" is tantamount to treason and invites immediate death from Ravana. However, Maricha's fear of Rama outweighs his fear of Ravana. He is caught in a dilemma where following Ravana means death by Rama, and refusing Ravana means death by Ravana. In this desperate situation, he attempts to opt-out of the sin itself, hoping that his logical refusal might yet sway the Rakshasa King, though he knows his fate is likely sealed either way.

पिछले श्लोक में दिए गए तर्क को अब मारीच स्वयं पर लागू कर रहा है। वह स्पष्ट रूप से कहता है कि वह रावण ('पर') के अपराध का फल नहीं भोगना चाहता। यहाँ मारीच का विद्रोह अपने चरम पर है; वह अपने राजा को 'न' कहने का साहस कर रहा है। 'अहम् त्वाम् न अनुयामि' (मैं तुम्हारा अनुसरण नहीं करूँगा) यह वाक्य राक्षस राज के समक्ष बोलना मृत्यु को आमंत्रण देने जैसा है, फिर भी राम का भय रावण के भय से अधिक है। मारीच जानता है कि रावण के साथ जाने का अर्थ है राम के हाथों मृत्यु, और मना करने का अर्थ है रावण के हाथों मृत्यु। इस धर्मसंकट में वह रावण के पाप का भागीदार बनने से इनकार कर रहा है, यह सोचकर कि शायद रावण उसकी तार्किक बात मान जाए।
