दीप्त जिह्वो महादंष्ट्रः तीक्ष्ण शृंगो महाबलः ।
व्यचरन् दंडाकारण्यम् मांस भक्षो महामृगः ॥ ॥३-३९-३॥
Dīpta jihvo mahādaṃṣṭraḥ tīkṣṇa śṛṅgo mahābalaḥ । Vyacaran daṇḍākāraṇyam māṃsa bhakṣo mahāmṛgaḥ ॥ ॥3-39-3॥
Translation
With a flaming tongue, huge fangs, sharp horns, and great strength, I wandered the Dandaka forest as a gigantic, flesh-eating deer.

मेरी लपलपाती हुई जीभ, बड़ी-बड़ी दाढ़ें और तीखे सींग थे। मैं महाबली और मांसभक्षी महामृग बनकर दंडकारण्य में विचरण करता था।
English Commentary
Maricha vividly describes his monstrous disguise. Although technically in the form of a deer (mrigah), the descriptors—flaming tongue, huge fangs, flesh-eating—indicate a grotesque hybridization intended to terrorize. This stands in stark contrast to the enchanting 'Golden Deer' form he will later assume for Sita. Here, the disguise serves his predatory nature directly. It highlights the versatility of Rakshasa illusion (maya), capable of creating both horror to repel enemies and beauty to entrap victims.

यहाँ मारीच अपने भयानक रूप का वर्णन कर रहा है। यद्यपि उसने मृग (हिरण) का रूप धरा था, फिर भी वह कोई सामान्य हिरण नहीं था। 'दीप्त जिह्वो' (जलती हुई जीभ) और 'मांस भक्षो' (मांस खाने वाला) जैसे विशेषण उसे एक विकृत और डरावने जीव के रूप में प्रस्तुत करते हैं। यह रूप सौंदर्य के लिए नहीं, बल्कि ऋषियों को डराने और मारने के लिए था। यह स्वर्ण मृग (जिसका रूप वह बाद में लेगा) से बिल्कुल विपरीत है। वह रूप लोभ जगाने के लिए होगा, जबकि यह रूप भय उत्पन्न करने के लिए था।
