अग्निहोत्रेषु तीर्थेषु चैत्य वृक्षेषु रावण ।
अत्यन्त घोरो व्यचरन् तापसान् संप्रधर्षयन् ॥ ॥३-३९-४॥
Agnihotreṣu tīrtheṣu caitya vṛkṣeṣu rāvaṇa । Atyanta ghoro vyacaran tāpasān saṃpradharṣayan ॥ ॥3-39-4॥
Translation
O Ravana, appearing extremely terrifying, I wandered around places of fire-sacrifice, holy waters, and religious sanctuaries (Chaitya trees), terrorizing the ascetics.

हे रावण! मैं अत्यंत घोर रूप धारण करके अग्निहोत्र-स्थलों, तीर्थों और चैत्य-वृक्षों के पास रहने वाले तपस्वियों को डराता हुआ घूमता था।
English Commentary
Maricha details his targets, which represent the pillars of Vedic spiritual life: fire sacrifices (Agnihotra), holy water bodies (Tirthas), and sacred trees (Chaitya vṛkṣas). This characterizes the Rakshasas as not merely wild beasts, but active agents of anti-dharma, specifically seeking to disrupt spiritual order. By recounting this to Ravana, Maricha establishes his credentials as a formidable and ruthless demon, thereby adding weight to his argument: 'Even I, who terrorized the holiest of places, am terrified of Rama.'

इस श्लोक में राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति का मुख्य उद्देश्य स्पष्ट होता है—धर्म का विनाश। मारीच विशेष रूप से उन स्थानों को निशाना बनाता था जो पवित्र थे: 'अग्निहोत्र' (यज्ञशाला), 'तीर्थ' (जलाशय/पवित्र स्थान) और 'चैत्य वृक्ष' (पूजनीय वृक्ष)। यह केवल हिंसा नहीं थी, बल्कि यह वैदिक संस्कृति और ऋषियों की साधना पर प्रहार था। रावण को यह सुनाने का उद्देश्य यह बताना है कि मैं (मारीच) भी कम क्रूर नहीं था, मैंने भी ऋषियों को बहुत सताया है, लेकिन राम के सामने मेरी यह क्रूरता भी व्यर्थ सिद्ध हुई।
