निहत्य दंडकारण्ये तापसान् धर्मचरिणः ।
रुधिराणि पिबन्तः तेषाम् तन् मांसानि च भक्षयन् ॥ ॥३-३९-५॥
Nihatya daṇḍakāraṇye tāpasān dharmacariṇaḥ । Rudhirāṇi pibantaḥ teṣām tan māṃsāni ca bhakṣayan ॥ ॥3-39-5॥
Translation
Killing the ascetics who practiced righteousness in the Dandaka forest, I used to drink their blood and eat their flesh.

दंडकारण्य में धर्म का आचरण करने वाले तपस्वियों की हत्या करके, मैं उनका रक्त पीता था और उनका मांस खाता था।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the absolute height of brutality and adharma. Maricha admits to killing peace-loving hermits (dharmacharinah) and consuming them. This cannibalistic imagery serves two purposes: it illustrates the terrifying nature of the threat the sages faced, justifying Rama's intervention, and it shows the depth of Maricha's past depravity. By confessing these acts, Maricha emphasizes that his current refusal to fight Rama comes not from a lack of inherent ferocity, but from a traumatic realization of Rama's superior power.

यहाँ क्रूरता की पराकाष्ठा का वर्णन है। 'धर्मचरिणः' (धर्म पर चलने वाले) ऋषियों की हत्या करना और उनका भक्षण करना सबसे बड़ा पाप है। मारीच स्वीकार कर रहा है कि वह नरभक्षी (cannibalistic) कृत्यों में लिप्त था। यह संदर्भ इसलिए महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यही वह पाप था जिसके कारण राम को दंडकारण्य में राक्षसों के विनाश की प्रतिज्ञा लेनी पड़ी थी। मारीच स्वयं अपने मुख से अपने घोर पापों का वर्णन कर रहा है, जो बाद में उसके हृदय परिवर्तन (डर के कारण) की पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है।
