Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ऋषि मांस अशनः क्रूरः त्रासयन् वनगोचरान् ।
तदा रुधिर मत्तो अहम् व्यचरन् दंडका वनम् ॥ ॥३-३९-६॥
Ṛṣi māṃsa aśanaḥ krūraḥ trāsayan vanagocarān । Tadā rudhira matto aham vyacaran daṇḍakā vanam ॥ ॥3-39-6॥
Translation
Eating the flesh of sages, cruel, and frightening the forest dwellers, I wandered the Dandaka forest back then, intoxicated by blood.

उस समय ऋषियों का मांस खाने वाला, क्रूर और वनवासियों को डराने वाला मैं, खून के नशे में चूर होकर दंडक वन में घूमता था।
English Commentary
Maricha describes himself as rudhira mattah—drunk on blood. This implies a state of frenzy where reason is lost to violence. He terrorized all beings in the forest (vanagocharan). This description of his past self mirrors Ravana's current state: arrogant, cruel, and intoxicated by power. Maricha uses his past explicitly as a cautionary tale. He is essentially saying, 'I was exactly like you are now—bloodthirsty and arrogant—until I met Rama.' It is a plea for Ravana to recognize the danger before he too is sobered by destruction.

मारीच अपनी मानसिक स्थिति का वर्णन 'रुधिर मत्तो' (खून के नशे में पागल) कहकर करता है। हिंसा का नशा मदिरा से भी गहरा होता है। वह स्वयं को 'क्रूर' स्वीकार करता है। यह आत्म-स्वीकृति (confession) है। वह रावलन को बता रहा है कि जब वह अपनी शक्ति के मद में चूर था, तब उसका सामना राम से हुआ। भावार्थ यह है कि रावण भी अभी सत्ता और शक्ति के नशे में है, और उसे मारीच के अनुभव से सीखना चाहिए कि यह नशा राम के एक बाण से उतर जाता है।
