Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सः अहम् वन गतम् रामम् परिभूय महाबलम् ।
तापसो अयम् इति ज्ञात्वा पूर्व वैरम् अनुस्मरन् ।
॥३-३९-९॥
Saḥ aham vana gatam rāmam paribhūya mahābalam । Tāpaso ayam iti jñātvā pūrva vairam anusmaran ॥ ॥3-39-9॥
Translation
Seeing the mighty Rama in the forest, I disregarded his power. Thinking "He is just an ascetic," and remembering my old enmity, I decided to attack.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महाबली राम को वन में आया देख, मैंने उनका तिरस्कार किया। "यह तो मात्र एक तपस्वी है," ऐसा मानकर और अपने पुराने बैर को याद करके (मैं उन पर झपटा)।
English Commentary
Here, Maricha confesses his fatal error of judgment. The word paribhuya (disregarding/underestimating) is key; despite his past defeat, he allowed Rama's current appearance as a hermit to cloud his memory of Rama's strength (mahabalam). Driven by a grudge (purva vairam), he fell into the trap of confirmation bias, seeing only what he wanted to see: a weak ascetic, rather than a dangerous warrior. This serves as a direct parallel to Ravana's current mindset. Maricha is essentially saying, "I made the mistake of thinking he was weak because he wore bark; do not make the same mistake."

यह श्लोक मारीच की 'विनाशकाले विपरीत बुद्धि' का सटीक उदाहरण है। 'परिभूय' (तिरस्कार/अनदेखा करके) शब्द उसकी अहंकारपूर्ण मानसिकता को दर्शाता है। उसने राम के 'महाबल' को नहीं देखा, केवल उनके 'तपस्वी' रूप को देखा। यह एक क्लासिक भूल है—शत्रु को उसके बाहरी आवरण से आंकना। 'पूर्व वैरम् अनुस्मरन्' (पुराने बैर को याद करते हुए) यह बताता है कि प्रतिशोध की आग ने उसकी विवेक-बुद्धि को हर लिया था। वह भूल गया कि इन्हीं राम ने बचपन में उसे समुद्र पार फेंक दिया था। यह श्लोक रावण को चेतावनी है कि वह भी राम के वनवासी रूप को देखकर धोखे में न रहे।
