Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तदा प्रकृतिम् आपन्नो भवान् स्वर्गम् गमिष्यति ।
अनुपस्थीयमानो माम् स क्रुद्धो व्याजहार ह ॥ ॥३-४-१८॥
tadā prakṛtim āpanno bhavān svargam gamiṣyati । anupasthīyamāno mām sa kruddho vyājahāra ha ॥ ॥3-4-18॥
Translation
"...then, regaining your original nature, you shall go to heaven." He uttered this in anger because I did not attend upon him.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"...तब तुम अपने स्वाभाविक रूप को प्राप्त होकर स्वर्ग जाओगे।" मेरी अनुपस्थिति (सेवा न करने) के कारण क्रोधित होकर उन्होंने ऐसा कहा था।
English Commentary
This verse explains the cause of the curse: negligence of duty. Tumburu failed to attend upon Kubera, likely due to a distraction mentioned in the next verse. Kubera's anger resulted in the demotion of a celestial being to a demonic existence. The phrase prakṛtim āpanno (regaining original nature) is significant philosophically; it suggests that the demonic form was an external imposition or a temporary state, while the celestial nature remained the dormant reality. Rama acts as the catalyst to restore this original state.

इस श्लोक में शाप का कारण स्पष्ट किया गया है। 'अनुपस्थीयमानो' का अर्थ है सेवा में उपस्थित न होना। गंधर्वों का कर्तव्य कुबेर की सभा में गायन और सेवा करना था। अपनी ड्यूटी से अनुपस्थित रहने को अनुशासनहीनता माना गया, जिसके फलस्वरूप कुबेर क्रोधित हुए। 'प्रकृतिम् आपन्नो' का अर्थ है अपने मूल गंधर्व स्वरूप को पुनः प्राप्त करना। यह दर्शाता है कि पाप या शाप व्यक्ति के मूल स्वभाव को बदलता नहीं, बल्कि उसे ढक देता है; प्रायश्चित या दंड भोगने के बाद मूल स्वरूप पुनः प्रकट हो जाता है।
