Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अवटे च अपि माम् राम निक्षिप्य कुशली व्रज ।
रक्षसाम् गत सत्त्वानाम् एष धर्मः सनातनः ॥ ॥३-४-२२॥
avaṭe ca api mām rāma nikṣipya kuśalī vraja । rakṣasām gata sattvānām eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥ ॥3-4-22॥
Translation
O Rama, cast me into a pit and go safely. This is the eternal custom for Rakshasas who have lost their lives.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! मुझे गड्ढे में डालकर (गाड़कर) आप सकुशल आगे बढ़ें। मरे हुए राक्षसों के लिए यही सनातन धर्म (प्रथा) है।
English Commentary
This verse highlights a distinctive anthropological detail in the Ramayana: the funeral rites of Rakshasas differ from the Vedic Aryan tradition of cremation. Viradha requests burial in a pit (avata), citing it as the sanatana dharma (eternal custom) of his adopted kin, the Rakshasas. This request is significant because it asks Rama to honor the customs of the being he just slew. It shows that dharma is context-specific; even in death, the specific rituals appropriate to the deceased's body/status must be observed to ensure their transition to the next world.

यह श्लोक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण सांस्कृतिक जानकारी देता है। वैदिक आर्य परंपरा में दाह-संस्कार (अग्निदाह) मुख्य था, लेकिन यहाँ विराध बताता है कि राक्षसों का सनातन धर्म (प्राचीन प्रथा) शव को भूमि में गाड़ना (अवटे निक्षिप्य) है। वह राम से अनुरोध करता है कि उसका अंतिम संस्कार उसकी (राक्षस) परंपरा के अनुसार ही किया जाए। यह श्रीराम की उदारता और 'सर्व-धर्म-सम्भाव' का भी परिचायक बनेगा कि वे एक राक्षस की अंतिम इच्छा और उसकी कुल-परंपरा का सम्मान करते हुए उसे गड्ढे में गाड़ते हैं, जलाते नहीं।
