स्वयम् विराधेन हि मृत्युम् आत्मनः प्रसह्य रामेण वधार्थम् ईप्सितः ।
निवेदितः कानन चारिणा स्वयम् न मे वधः शस्त्र कृतो भवेत् इति ॥ ॥३-४-३१॥
svayam virādhena hi mṛtyum ātmanaḥ prasahya rāmeṇa vadhārtham īpsitaḥ । niveditaḥ kānana cāriṇā svayam na me vadhaḥ śastra kṛto bhavet iti ॥ ॥3-4-31॥
Translation
Indeed, Viradha himself had desired his death at the hands of Rama forcefully. The forest-dweller himself had stated, "My death cannot be caused by weapons."

विराध ने स्वयं ही राम के हाथों बलपूर्वक अपनी मृत्यु की इच्छा की थी। उस वनचारी ने स्वयं निवेदन किया था कि "शस्त्रों से मेरा वध नहीं हो सकता।"
English Commentary
The narrative emphasizes that the intelligence came from the source itself. Viradha, tired of his cursed existence, acted as a collaborator in his own demise by revealing, "My death cannot be caused by weapons." This reflects the theme of iccha-mrityu (death at will) or choosing one's end. By telling Rama how to kill him, Viradha transformed the combat into a ritual of deliverance. It underscores that the physical battle was merely a formality for a pre-ordained spiritual liberation.

यहाँ वाल्मीकि पुष्टि करते हैं कि यह रणनीति विराध की सूचना पर आधारित थी। विराध ने अपनी मृत्यु का रहस्य (secret) स्वयं राम को बताया था। यह एक विचित्र स्थिति है जहाँ शत्रु स्वयं अपनी पराजय का उपाय बताता है, जो यह सिद्ध करता है कि वह वास्तव में मुक्ति चाह रहा था। 'प्रसह्य' (बलपूर्वक) का अर्थ है कि वह चाहता था कि राम अपनी शक्ति का प्रयोग करें। 'कानन चारिणा' (वन में घूमने वाले) विशेषण विराध के लिए प्रयुक्त है। यह श्लोक राम की दयालुता को भी दिखाता है कि उन्होंने शत्रु की प्रार्थना स्वीकार की।
