मारीचस्य तु तत् वाक्यम् क्षमम् युक्तम् च रावणः ।
उक्तो न प्रतिजग्राह मर्तु काम इव औषधम् ॥३-४०-१॥
mārīcasya tu tat vākyam kṣamam yuktam ca rāvaṇaḥ |
ukto na pratijagrāha martu kāma iva auṣadham ॥3-40-1॥
Translation
But Ravana did not accept those appropriate and beneficial words spoken by Maricha, just as a man wishing to die (or destined to die) does not accept medicine.

मारीच के द्वारा कहे गए वे हितकारी और उचित वचन रावण ने स्वीकार नहीं किए, जैसे मृत्यु की इच्छा वाला (मरणधर्मा) रोगी औषधि को स्वीकार नहीं करता।
English Commentary
This marks the beginning of Sarga 40. Valmiki describes Ravana's mental state using a poignant and classic simile. Just as a terminally ill patient, destined to die, rejects life-saving medicine, Ravana rejected the beneficial and logical counsel of Maricha. The phrase Martu kama refers to one who is desirous of death or whose time of death has arrived. This verse exemplifies the adage "Vinasha Kale Viparita Buddhi" (when destruction is near, the intellect becomes perverted). Ravana's arrogance and destiny blind him to the truth. Despite Maricha's words being described as Kshamam (beneficial/competent) and Yuktam (reasonable/logical), they found no place in Ravana's doomed psyche.

यहाँ से ४०वाँ सर्ग आरम्भ होता है। वाल्मीकि रावण की मानसिक स्थिति का वर्णन एक प्रसिद्ध उपमा के माध्यम से करते हैं। जैसे एक रोगी जिसका अंतिम समय निकट आ गया हो, वह जीवनदायिनी औषधि को भी ठुकरा देता है, वैसे ही रावण ने मारीच की कल्याणकारी सलाह को अस्वीकार कर दिया। 'मर्तु काम' का अर्थ है वह व्यक्ति जिसे मृत्यु ने अपनी चपेट में ले लिया है या जो मृत्यु की कामना कर रहा है। यह श्लोक 'विनाशकाले विपरीत बुद्धि' की उक्ति को चरितार्थ करता है। रावण का अहंकार और नियति उसे सत्य देखने से रोक रही है। मारीच के वचन 'क्षमम्' (हितकारी) और 'युक्तम्' (तर्कसंगत) थे, फिर भी रावण ने उन्हें ग्रहण नहीं किया।
