वाक्यम् अप्रतिकूलम् तु मृदु पूर्वम् शुभम् हितम् ।
उपचारेण युक्तम् च वक्तव्यो वसुधा अधिपः ॥३-४०-१०॥
vākyam apratikūlam tu mṛdu pūrvam śubham hitam |
upacāreṇa yuktam ca vaktavyo vasudhā adhipaḥ ॥3-40-10॥
Translation
The Lord of the Earth (King) should be spoken to with words that are not contradictory, which are gentle at first, auspicious, beneficial, and full of courtesy.

पृथ्वी के स्वामी (राजा) से सदा अनुकूल, पहले कोमल, शुभ, हितकारी और शिष्टाचार से युक्त वचन ही कहने चाहिए।
English Commentary
Ravana continues his lecture on how to address a Vasudha-adhipa (Lord of the Earth/King). He demands speech that is Apratikulam (non-antagonistic), gentle, and courteous. The irony is stark: Ravana insists on Hitam (beneficial) speech, yet he has just rejected Maricha's truly beneficial advice because it wasn't Mridu (gentle) or compliant. Ravana is essentially creating a filter where reality must be sugarcoated to be acceptable. This reveals a leader who is intolerant of dissent and fragile in the face of harsh truths. He values the form and tone of speech over its substance and veracity, a fatal flaw for any ruler.

रावण यहाँ संचार कौशल (Communication skills) पर व्याख्यान दे रहा है कि राजा से कैसे बात करनी चाहिए। वह कहता है कि वचन 'अप्रतिकूल' (विरोध रहित) होने चाहिए। यह अत्यंत विरोधाभासी है क्योंकि मारीच ने जो कहा वह 'हितम्' (हितकारी) था, लेकिन रावण उसे केवल इसलिए अस्वीकार कर रहा है क्योंकि वह 'प्रतिकूल' (विपरीत) था। रावण चाहता है कि कड़वी सच्चाई भी चीनी की चाशनी में लपेटकर ('मृदु पूर्वम्' - पहले मीठा बोलकर) दी जाए, या दी ही न जाए। यह श्लोक रावण की मानसिक कमजोरी को उजागर करता है—वह सत्य का सामना करने में असमर्थ है और केवल वही सुनना चाहता है जो उसके कानों को प्रिय लगे, चाहे वह उसके विनाश का कारण ही क्यों न हो।
