Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मया उक्तम् अपि च एतावत् त्वाम् प्रति अमितविक्रम ।
अस्मिन् तु स भवान् कृत्ये साहाय्यम् कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥३-४०-१६॥
mayā uktam api ca etāvat tvām prati amitavikrama |
asmin tu sa bhavān kṛtye sāhāyyam kartum arhasi ॥3-40-16॥
Translation
O one of immeasurable valor (Maricha), even though I have spoken this much (harshly) to you, you, being such a one, ought to render help in this task.

हे अमित पराक्रमी (मारीच)! मैंने तुम्हारे प्रति इतना (कठोर) कहा है, फिर भी आप (भवान्) इस कार्य में मेरी सहायता करने के योग्य हैं।
English Commentary
After browbeating and lecturing Maricha, Ravana shifts tone slightly, addressing him as Amitavikrama (one of unmeasured valor). This is a manipulative compliment. Ravana acknowledges that he has spoken harshly/extensively (etavat uktam), but insists that Maricha must still assist him. The phrase Sa Bhavan (You, being that capable person) suggests that Ravana recognizes Maricha is the only one capable of executing this illusion. It is a mix of coercion and flattery. Ravana needs Maricha’s unique skills in Maya (illusion), so he demands cooperation as a matter of duty, pivoting from insult to expectation of service.

धमकाने और अपमानित करने के बाद, रावण अब थोड़ा नरम पड़ता है और मारीच को 'अमितविक्रम' (असीम पराक्रम वाला) कहकर उसकी प्रशंसा करता है। यह रावण की कूटनीति है—पहले डराना, फिर थोड़ा सम्मान देना ताकि काम बन जाए। 'स भवान्' (वह आप) का प्रयोग इंगित करता है कि रावण मानता है कि केवल मारीच ही यह मायावी कार्य कर सकता है। रावण स्वीकार करता है कि उसने कठोर वचन कहे हैं, लेकिन वह अधिकारपूर्वक सहायता की माँग करता है। यह एक राजा का आदेश है जिसे टाला नहीं जा सकता। रावण जानता है कि मारीच के पास माया की शक्ति है जो सीता हरण के लिए अनिवार्य है।
