आश्रमे तस्य रामस्य सीतायाः प्रमुखे चर ।
प्रलोभयित्वा वैदेहीम् यथा इष्टम् गन्तुम् अर्हसि ॥३-४०-१८॥
āśrame tasya rāmasya sītāyāḥ pramukhe cara |
pralobhayitvā vaidehīm yathā iṣṭam gantum arhasi ॥3-40-18॥
Translation
Wander in that ashram of Rama, right in front of Sita. Having allured Vaidehi (Sita), you may then go wherever you please.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस राम के आश्रम में सीता के सामने तुम (मृग रूप में) विचरण करो। वैदेही (सीता) को प्रलोभित करने के बाद तुम जहाँ चाहो वहाँ जा सकते हो।
English Commentary
Ravana gives precise instructions to Maricha for the execution of his stratagem. Knowing Sita's love for nature, he anticipates that a unique deer wandering in the ashram will naturally captivate her. The term Pralobhayitva (having allured/tempted) is central here. The objective is to incite desire or curiosity in Sita, which will serve as the mechanism to separate her from her protector, Rama. Ravana attempts to reassure Maricha by suggesting that his role is limited merely to the act of temptation, after which he can depart freely. This is a manipulative assurance, as Ravana downplays the immense danger involved in provoking Rama, trying to make the suicide mission sound like a simple task.

रावण अपनी योजना के क्रियान्वयन के लिए मारीच को सटीक निर्देश दे रहा है। वह जानता है कि सीता प्रकृति प्रेमी हैं, अतः आश्रम के प्राकृतिक वातावरण में एक अद्भुत मृग को देखकर उनका आकर्षित होना स्वाभाविक है। 'प्रलोभयित्वा' (ललचाकर/मोहित करके) शब्द यहाँ अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। रावण का उद्देश्य सीता के मन में लोभ या कौतूहल उत्पन्न करना है, जो अंततः उनके रक्षक (राम) को उनसे दूर ले जाएगा। रावण मारीच को आश्वासन देता है कि उसका कार्य केवल सीता को ललचाना है; उसके बाद वह स्वतंत्र हो जाएगा। यह रावण की दूरदर्शिता है कि वह मारीच को विश्वास दिलाना चाहता है कि यह कार्य छोटा और सुरक्षित है, जबकि वास्तव में यह मृत्यु का फंदा है।
