नो चेत् करोषि मारीच हन्मि त्वाम् अहम् अद्य वै ।
एतत् कार्यम् अवश्यम् मे बलाद् अपि करिष्यसि ।
राज्ञो हि प्रतिकूलस्थो न जातु सुखम् एधते ॥३-४०-२६॥
no cet karoṣi mārīca hanmi tvām aham adya vai |
etat kāryam avaśyam me balād api kariṣyasi |
rājño hi pratikūlastho na jātu sukham edhate ॥3-40-26॥
Translation
If you do not do this, O Maricha, I will indeed kill you today. You shall inevitably do this work of mine, even if by force. For one who stands against the king never prospers/finds happiness.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मारीच! यदि तुम ऐसा नहीं करोगे, तो मैं तुम्हें आज ही मार डालूँगा। तुम्हें मेरा यह कार्य बलपूर्वक (विवश होकर) भी अवश्य करना ही होगा। राजा के प्रतिकूल (विरोध में) रहने वाला कभी सुख नहीं पाता।
English Commentary
Ravana drops all pretenses of persuasion and resorts to naked tyranny. The ultimatum is stark: "I will kill you today" (Hanmi tvam aham adya) if you refuse. He explicitly states that Maricha will be forced (Balad api) to comply. The closing line asserts a brutal political maxim: opposing the King leads to misery. This shows Ravana's total lack of moral compass; he is willing to murder his own kinsman and wise counselor instantly if his whims are not catered to. It is the final clamp on Maricha, leaving him no exit.

अब रावण अपनी असली प्रकृति पर उतर आता है। सारे प्रलोभन और तर्क समाप्त होने पर वह 'प्राण दंड' की धमकी देता है। 'हन्मि त्वाम् अहम् अद्य' (मैं तुम्हें आज ही मार दूँगा) — यह एक स्पष्ट और अंतिम चेतावनी है। रावण कहता है कि मारीच को यह कार्य 'बलाद् अपि' (बलपूर्वक/मजबूरी में) करना ही होगा; उसके पास कोई विकल्प नहीं है। अंतिम पंक्ति एक राजनीतिक सूक्ति है: राजा से बैर करके कोई सुखी नहीं रह सकता। यहाँ रावण अपनी निरंकुश सत्ता का प्रयोग कर रहा है, यह सिद्ध करते हुए कि वह अपनी इच्छा के लिए अपने ही मामा और हितैषी का वध करने में भी संकोच नहीं करेगा।
