यत् किल एतत् अयुक्तार्थम् मारीच मयि कथ्यते ।
वाक्यम् निष्फलम् अत्यर्थम् बीजम् उप्तम् इव ऊषरे ॥३-४०-३॥
yat kila etat ayuktārtham mārīca mayi kathyate |
vākyam niṣphalam atyartham bījam uptam iva ūṣare ॥3-40-3॥
Translation
O Maricha, this inappropriate matter that is being spoken by you to me—these words are utterly fruitless, like seeds sown in barren soil.

हे मारीच! मेरे विषय में जो यह अयुक्त (अनुचित) बात तुम कह रहे हो, तुम्हारे यह वचन मेरे लिए उसी प्रकार अत्यंत निष्फल हैं, जैसे ऊसर (बंजर) भूमि में बोया गया बीज।
English Commentary
Ravana begins his rebuttal here, completely dismissing Maricha's counsel. The irony is palpable: Ravana labels Maricha's wise words as Ayuktartham (having inappropriate meaning/useless), whereas it is Ravana's plan that is truly inappropriate. Ravana uses the simile of sowing seeds in Ushare (barren/saline soil) to describe the futility of Maricha's advice. He implies that just as barren land yields no harvest, Maricha's words will yield no change in Ravana's mind. This demonstrates Ravana's obstinacy; he has cemented his resolve, and no amount of logic or wisdom can penetrate it. He inadvertently admits that he is impervious to good counsel, much like infertile ground.

रावण अब बोलना आरम्भ करता है। वह मारीच की सलाह को पूरी तरह खारिज करता है। विडंबना यह है कि रावण मारीच की ज्ञानपूर्ण बातों को 'अयुक्तार्थम्' (बेकार/अनुचित अर्थ वाली) कह रहा है, जबकि वास्तव में रावण की योजना अनुचित है। रावण एक उपमा देता है: 'बीजम् उप्तम् इव ऊषरे' (जैसे बंजर भूमि में बीज बोना)। रावण का आशय है कि मारीच का उपदेश उस पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं डालेगा। यह रावण की हठधर्मिता को दर्शाता है कि उसने अपना मन बना लिया है और अब कोई भी तर्क, चाहे वह कितना भी श्रेष्ठ क्यों न हो, उसके निश्चय को बदल नहीं सकता। वह स्वयं को 'ऊसर भूमि' के समान (उपदेश ग्रहण करने में असमर्थ) घोषित कर रहा है, यद्यपि अनजाने में।
