त्वत् वाक्यैः न तु माम् शक्यम् - भेतुम् - भेत्तुम् रामस्य संयुगे ।
पाप शीलस्य मूर्खस्य मानुषस्य विशेषतः ॥३-४०-४॥
tvat vākyaiḥ na tu mām śakyam - bhetum - bhettum rāmasya saṃyuge |
pāpa śīlasya mūrkhasya mānuṣasya viśeṣataḥ ॥3-40-4॥
Translation
It is not possible to deter me from the battle with Rama by your words—(Rama) who is of sinful conduct, a fool, and above all, merely a human being.

तुम्हारे वचनों से मुझे राम के साथ युद्ध करने से विचलित नहीं किया जा सकता (रोका नहीं जा सकता); जो (राम) पापचारी है, मूर्ख है और विशेष रूप से केवल एक मनुष्य है।
English Commentary
Ravana's arrogance is on full display here. He levels three severe (and factually incorrect within the epic's context) insults at Rama: 1. Papa shilasya (of sinful nature), 2. Murkhasya (a fool), and 3. Manushasya (a mere human). Ravana calls Rama a sinner for killing Rakshasas. He deems Rama a fool for renouncing the kingdom to dwell in the forest. By emphasizing Rama is a "human," Ravana dismisses the threat, relying on his boon from Brahma where he asked for immunity from gods and demons but neglected to ask for protection from humans, considering them trivial. This verse underscores Ravana's delusion and twisted perspective, as he dangerously underestimates the very being destined to kill him.

रावण का अहंकार यहाँ स्पष्ट दिखाई देता है। वह राम के चरित्र पर तीन गंभीर (और झूठे) आक्षेप लगाता है: 1. 'पाप शीलस्य' (पापी स्वभाव वाला), 2. 'मूर्खस्य' (मूर्ख), और 3.
