आज्ञEPTो रावणेन इत्थम् प्रतिकूलम् च राजवत् ।
अब्रवीत् परुषम् वाक्यम् निःशन्को राक्षसाधिपम् ॥३-४१-१॥
ājñapto rāvaṇena ittham pratikūlam ca rājavat |
abravīt paruṣam vākyam niḥśanko rākṣasādhipam ॥3-41-1॥
Translation
Thus ordered by Ravana in a kingly (imperious) manner, Maricha too spoke harsh words fearlessly to the Lord of Rakshasas, contrary to (Ravana's desire).

रावण द्वारा इस प्रकार राजा की तरह (कठोरता से) आज्ञा दिए जाने पर, मारीच ने भी निडर होकर (निःशंक) राक्षसराज से प्रतिकूल (कठोर/विपरीत) वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This begins Sarga 41. Ravana's imperious command (Rajavat - like a king/tyrant) does not silence Maricha. Instead, facing the inevitability of death removes Maricha's fear (Nihshanko - without hesitation/doubt). Knowing his fate is sealed either way, Maricha chooses to speak Parusham (harsh/blunt) words that are Pratikulam (contrary) to Ravana's wishes. He no longer caters to the King's ego. This verse marks Maricha's transition from a fearful advisor to a fearless truth-teller, deciding to spend his last moments confronting the tyrant with the bitter truth rather than submitting meekly.

यहाँ से ४१वाँ सर्ग आरम्भ होता है। रावण की धमकियों का मारीच पर वह प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा जो रावण चाहता था (डरकर चुप हो जाना)। इसके विपरीत, मृत्यु को निकट देखकर मारीच का भय समाप्त हो गया है ('निःशंको')। चूँकि उसे पता है कि मरना तो है ही, इसलिए वह अब रावण के सम्मान की चिंता किए बिना 'परुषम् वाक्यम्' (कठोर सत्य) बोलता है। 'राजवत्' (राजा की तरह) शब्द रावण के अहंकार और अधिकार-प्रदर्शन को दर्शाता है। मारीच अब एक मंत्री की तरह नहीं, बल्कि एक ऐसे व्यक्ति की तरह बोल रहा है जिसके पास खोने के लिए कुछ नहीं है। वह सत्य के साथ मरने का निर्णय लेता है।
