दर्शनात् एव रामस्य हतम् माम् अवधारय ।
आत्मानम् च हतम् विद्धि हृत्वा सीताम् स बान्धवम् ॥ ॥३-४१-१८॥
Darśanāt eva rāmasya hatam mām avadhāraya । Ātmānam ca hatam viddhi hṛtvā sītām sa bāndhavam ॥ ॥3-41-18॥
Translation
Consider me dead from the very moment of seeing Rama. And know yourself to be dead too, along with your kinsmen, once you have abducted Sita.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम के दर्शन मात्र से ही तुम मुझे मृत समझो (क्योंकि मैं उनके सामने टिक नहीं पाऊंगा)। और सीता का हरण करके तुम भी अपने को भाई-बंधुओं सहित (स बान्धवम्) मृत ही जानो।
English Commentary
Maricha expresses absolute certainty about the outcome. There is no question of fighting or escaping; the mere sight (darśanāt) of Rama equates to Maricha's death. This highlights Rama's formidable prowess which Maricha has experienced firsthand. Parallel to his own fate, he seals Ravana's fate. He tells Ravana to consider himself and his entire clan (sa bāndhavam) already dead the moment the abduction occurs. Maricha is collapsing the timeline of cause and effect—the act of abduction is not just a crime, it is the execution sentence itself. He is trying one last time to make the consequences palpable to Ravana.
हिंदी टीका
मारीच राम के पराक्रम से इतना भयभीत (या परिचित) है कि वह युद्ध की संभावना को ही नकार देता है। वह कहता है 'दर्शनात् एव'—राम के देखने भर से मेरा अंत निश्चित है। उसे पता है कि राम का लक्ष्य अचूक है। इसके समानांतर, वह रावण के भविष्य की भी भविष्यवाणी करता है। जैसे मारीच का मरना तय है, वैसे ही सीता का हरण करते ही रावण का भी अंत तय है। 'विद्धि' (जान लो) शब्द का प्रयोग करके वह रावण को किसी भी भ्रम में न रहने की सलाह दे रहा है। यहाँ कार्य (सीता हरण) और परिणाम (विनाश) के बीच का समय समाप्त हो गया है; मारीच की दृष्टि में जिस क्षण सीता का हरण होगा, उसी क्षण रावण का भाग्य सील हो जाएगा।
