Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्त्वा तु परुषम् मारीचो रावणम् ततः ।
गच्छावः इति अब्रवीत् दीनो भयात् रात्रिम् चर प्रभोः ॥ ॥३-४२-१॥
Evam uktvā tu paruṣam mārīco rāvaṇam tataḥ । Gacchāvaḥ iti abravīt dīno bhayāt rātrim cara prabhoḥ ॥ ॥3-42-1॥
Translation
Having spoken harshly to Ravana in this manner, Maricha, dejected out of fear of the Lord of Night-wanderers, then said, "Let us go."
हिंदी अनुवाद
रावण से इस प्रकार कठोर (परुष) वचन कहने के बाद, मारीच ने राक्षसराज (रावण) के भय से दीन होकर कहा—"चलो, चलते हैं (गच्छावः)।"
English Commentary
This verse marks the transition from resistance to submission. Maricha has spoken paruṣam (harshly/bluntly), fulfilling his duty as a counselor. However, the reality of power dynamics takes over. Driven by bhayāt (fear) of Ravana, he becomes dīno (wretched/dejected) and agrees to the mission with the words gacchāvaḥ (let us go). This moment captures the tragedy of the subordinate; despite knowing the path leads to destruction, he is coerced into obedience by the immediate threat of violence from his master. It signifies the resignation of wisdom to the tyranny of power.

यहाँ से कथा नया मोड़ लेती है। मारीच ने अपना धर्म निभाया—उसने रावण को कड़वा सत्य ('परुषम्') सुनाया। परन्तु अंततः 'भयात्' (रावण के डर से) उसे झुकना पड़ा। 'दीनो' शब्द मारीच की विवशता को दर्शाता है; वह एक शक्तिशाली राक्षस होते हुए भी अपने राजा की हठधर्मिता के आगे असहाय है। 'गच्छावः' (हम दोनों चलते हैं) कहकर वह अपनी सहमति देता है। यह सहमति उत्साह से नहीं, बल्कि जीवन रक्षा की मूल प्रवृत्ति और हताशा से उपजी है। यह श्लोक सत्ता के सामने सत्य की हार का चित्रण है। मारीच जानता है कि वह मौत के मुँह में जा रहा है, फिर भी वह रावण के तत्काल क्रोध से बचने के लिए राम के बाणों का सामना करना चुनता है।
