हस्ते गृहीत्वा मारीचम् रावणो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ।
एतत् राम आश्रम पदम् दृश्यते कदली वृतम् ॥ ॥३-४२-१३॥
Haste gṛhītvā mārīcam rāvaṇo vākyam abravīt । Etat rāma āśrama padam dṛśyate kadalī vṛtam ॥ ॥3-42-13॥
Translation
Taking Maricha by the hand, Ravana spoke these words: "Here is seen the site of Rama's hermitage, surrounded by banana trees."
हिंदी अनुवाद
रावण ने मारीच का हाथ पकड़कर यह वचन कहा—"वह देखो, केले के वृक्षों (कदली) से घिरा हुआ राम का आश्रम दिखाई दे रहा है।"
English Commentary
Ravana physically guides Maricha, taking him by the hand. This gesture asserts dominance and control, ensuring Maricha stays focused on the lethal task. He points out the landmark: the ashram surrounded by kadalī (plantain/banana) trees. This detail adds realism to the setting of the hermitage, portraying it as a lush, serene dwelling, unaware of the impending doom.

रावण मारीच का हाथ पकड़ता है ('हस्ते गृहीत्वा')। यह स्नेह भी हो सकता है और जोर-जबर्दस्ती भी—यह सुनिश्चित करना कि मारीच भाग न जाए। वह आश्रम की पहचान बताता है जो 'कदली वृतम्' (केले के पेड़ों से घिरा हुआ) है। केले के पेड़ शुभता और शीतलता का प्रतीक हैं, जो आश्रम की शांतिपूर्ण प्रकृति को दर्शाते हैं। रावण इस शांति को भंग करने वाला है। यह 'टार्गेट एक्विजिशन' (Target Acquisition) का क्षण है।
