Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वैदूर्य संकाश खुरः तनु जंघः सुसंहतः ।
इन्द्र आयुध सवर्णेन पुच्छेन ऊर्ध्वम् विराजितः ॥ ॥३-४२-१८॥
Vaidūrya saṃkāśa khuraḥ tanu jaṅghaḥ susaṃhataḥ । Indra āyudha savarṇena pucchena ūrdhvam virājitaḥ ॥ ॥3-42-18॥
Translation
His hooves resembled the Cat's Eye gem; his legs were slender and his body compact. He was adorned with a raised tail that possessed the colors of Indra's weapon (the rainbow).
हिंदी अनुवाद
उसके खुर वैदूर्य मणि (लहसुनिया/Cat's Eye) के समान थे, पिंडलियाँ (Jangha) पतली थीं और शरीर सुगठित (सुसंहत) था। वह इन्द्रधनुष (इन्द्र आयुध) के रंग वाली ऊपर उठी हुई पूंछ से सुशोभित था।
English Commentary
The description concludes with the hooves and tail. The hooves shine like Vaidūrya (Lapis Lazuli or Cat's Eye). The legs are tanu (slender) and the body susaṃhataḥ (firm/compact). The crowning glory is the tail, which shines with the colors of the rainbow (Indra āyudha - Indra's bow). A rainbow-tailed deer is a physical impossibility, signaling clearly that this is a magical entity. This surreal beauty is designed to provoke Vismaya (wonder) and Lobha (desire) in the beholder.
हिंदी टीका
मृग का सबसे अद्भुत अंग उसकी पूंछ है। 'इन्द्र आयुध' का अर्थ है इंद्र का हथियार, यानी वज्र या इन्द्रधनुष। यहाँ यह इन्द्रधनुष के सप्तरंगी रंगों को इंगित करता है। एक मृग जिसकी पूंछ इंद्रधनुषी हो, वह निश्चय ही अलौकिक है। खुर 'वैदूर्य' (Cat's Eye Gem) जैसे हैं। शरीर 'सुसंहत' (Well-built/Compact) है। मारीच ने अपनी माया से एक 'परफेक्ट' जीव की रचना की है। यह सौंदर्य ही वह जाल है जिसमें सीता और अंततः रावण भी फँसने वाला है।
