राजीव चित्र पृष्ठः स विरराज महामृगः ।
राम आश्रम पद अभ्याशे विचचार यथा सुखम् ॥ ॥३-४२-२४॥
Rājīva citra pṛṣṭhaḥ sa virarāja mahāmṛgaḥ । Rāma āśrama pada abhyāśe vicacāra yathā sukham ॥ ॥3-42-24॥
Translation
With his back patterned like lotuses, that great deer shone continuously. He wandered comfortably in the vicinity of Rama’s hermitage.

जिसकी पीठ कमल के समान चित्रों से सुशोभित थी, वह महामृग (विशाल मृग) राम के आश्रम के समीप सुखपूर्वक (निर्भय होकर) विचरण करने लगा।
English Commentary
The descriptor rājīva citra pṛṣṭhaḥ (back variegated with lotus patterns) elevates the deer to a mythical status, as lotuses are associated with divinity and purity. He is called a mahāmṛgaḥ (great deer), indicating a stature larger and more impressive than common animals. The phrase vicacāra yathā sukham (wandered at ease/pleasure) indicates a terrifying boldness. He infiltrates the abhyāśe (vicinity/proximity) of Rama's home without displaying the natural fear a prey animal should have of humans, subtly baiting the occupants to interact with him.
