कुसुमानि अपचिन्वन्ती चचार रुचिरानना ।
अनर्हा अरण्य वासस्य सा तम् रत्नमयम् मृगम् ॥ ॥३-४२-३२॥
Kusumāni apacinvantī cacāra rucirānanā । Anarhā araṇya vāsasya sā tam ratnamayam mṛgam ॥ ॥3-42-32॥
Translation
The beautiful-faced lady, continuing to pick flowers and who was indeed unsuited for dwelling in the forest, then saw that deer made of jewels.

फूलों को चुनती हुई, सुंदर मुख वाली, जो वनवास के योग्य नहीं थीं, उन सीता ने उस रत्नमय मृग को देखा।
English Commentary
The poet introduces a profound note of pathos with the phrase anarhā araṇya vāsasya (unsuited for forest dwelling). This emphasizes Sita's royal delicacy, contrasting her nature with the harsh environment. It is precisely because she is accustomed to and worthy of opulence that she is drawn to the ratnamayam mṛgam (jewel-studded deer). This deer represents an unnatural intrusion of artificial luxury into the natural world, serving as a powerful visual trigger that exploits Sita's memory of her former life as a princess.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ सीता के प्रति गहरी करुणा व्यक्त करते हैं। 'अनर्हा अरण्य वासस्य' (जो वनवास के योग्य नहीं थीं) वाक्यांश सीता की कोमलता और शाही पृष्ठभूमि को रेखांकित करता है। उनके लिए वनवास एक त्याग था, और इस त्याग के बीच, उनका मन अनायास ही उस वस्तु की ओर आकर्षित होता है जो उनके पूर्व राजसी जीवन की याद दिलाती है—'रत्नमयम् मृगम्'। यह मृग उनके लिए केवल एक जानवर नहीं, बल्कि वैभव का प्रतीक था, जो दर्शाता है कि राक्षस ने उनकी सबसे गहरी मानवीय कमजोरी (राजसी सुखों के प्रति आकर्षण) को लक्ष्य बनाया था।
