किम् नु कर्तुम् मया शक्यम् एवम् त्वयि दुरात्मनि ।
एष गच्छामि अहम् तात स्वस्ति ते अस्तु निशाचरः ॥ ॥३-४२-४॥
Kim nu kartum mayā śakyam evam tvayi durātmani । Eṣa gacchāmi aham tāta svasti te astu niśācaraḥ ॥ ॥3-42-4॥
Translation
What can possibly be done by me when you are so wicked-minded? Here I go, O dear one. May auspiciousness be with you, O Night-wanderer!

तुम जैसे दुरात्मा (दुष्ट स्वभाव वाले) के होने पर, मैं क्या कर सकता हूँ? हे तात! (विवश होकर) मैं यह जा रहा हूँ। हे निशाचर! तुम्हारा कल्याण हो (स्वस्ति ते अस्तु)।
English Commentary
Maricha expresses his utter helplessness. With a leader as durātmani (vile-natured) as Ravana, rational action is impossible. He realizes his agency is gone. Saying "Here I go" (eṣa gacchāmi), he accepts his mission as a death march. His final words to Ravana, "May you be well" (svasti te astu), are poignant. Despite Ravana sending him to his death, Maricha maintains the decorum of a kinsman (tāta). It is a final goodbye, laden with irony, for Maricha knows well that there will be no swasti (well-being) for Ravana after this act. It is the resignation of a soldier obeying a suicidal command.
