Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पश्य अस्य जृंभमाणस्य दीप्ताम् अग्नि शिखोपमाम् ।
जिह्वाम् मुखात् निःसरंतीम् मेघात् इव शत ह्रदाम् ॥३-४३-२८॥
paśya asya jṛṃbhamāṇasya dīptām agni śikhopamām |
jihvām mukhāt niḥsarantīm meghāt iva śata hradām ॥3-43-28॥
Translation
Look, as it yawns, the tongue issuing from its mouth is blazing like a flame of fire, resembling lightning darting from a cloud.
हिंदी अनुवाद
देखो, जब यह जंभाई लेता है, तो इसके मुख से निकलती हुई जीभ अग्नि की लपट के समान दीप्त और बादलों से निकलती हुई बिजली (शतह्रदा) के समान प्रतीत होती है।
English Commentary
This verse utilizes striking imagery to describe the deer's vitality. Rama compares the deer's tongue to a 'agni shikha' (tongue of fire) and 'shata hradam' (lightning). When the deer yawns, the contrast of the bright tongue against its face is likened to lightning emerging from a dark cloud ('meghat iva'). While intended as praise of its beauty, the metaphors of fire and lightning subtly hint at the danger lurking within. Rama is captivated by the visual spectacle, interpreting these signs as marks of a divine animal, whereas they essentially belong to a powerful demon capable of changing form.

यह श्लोक अद्भुत उपमाओं से भरा है। श्रीराम मृग की जीभ की तुलना 'अग्नि शिखा' (आग की लपट) और 'शतह्रदा' (बिजली) से करते हैं। जब मृग जंभाई लेता है (मुँह खोलता है), तो उसका गहरा रंग बादलों जैसा और उसकी लाल-गुलाबी जीभ बिजली जैसी चमकती है। यह सौंदर्य के साथ-साथ शक्ति और तेज का भी प्रतीक है। हालाँकि, प्रतीकात्मक रूप से देखें तो 'अग्नि' और 'बिजली' विनाश के भी सूचक हैं। अजाने में ही सही, श्रीराम उस खतरे का वर्णन कर रहे हैं जो उस सुंदर मुख के भीतर छिपा है, क्योंकि वह वास्तव में एक राक्षस है।
