एतेन हि नृशंसेन मारीचेन अकृत आत्मना ।
वने विचरता पूर्वम् हिंसिता मुनि पुंगवाः ॥३-४३-३९॥

vane vicaratā pūrvam hiṃsitā muni puṃgavāḥ ॥3-43-39॥
Translation
For, wandering in the forest, this cruel Mareecha of uncultivated soul has previously killed many eminent sages.
हिंदी अनुवाद
क्योंकि, वन में विचरण करते हुए इस क्रूर और अपवित्र आत्मा वाला मारीच ने पूर्व में अनेक श्रेष्ठ मुनियों की हिंसा (वध) की है।
English Commentary
Rama recalls the criminal history of Mareecha to justify the lethal response. He describes Mareecha as 'nrishamsena' (cruel/murderous) and 'akrita atmana' (uncultivated or evil-souled). He reminds Lakshmana that this demon has a history of roaming the forests and slaughtering 'muni pungavah' (eminent sages). By invoking Mareecha's past atrocities (which Rama had encountered in his youth alongside Vishwamitra), Rama shifts the narrative context from hunting a pet to executing a known criminal. This serves to align Lakshmana with the mission, as removing such threats is a primary objective of their forest stay.

श्रीराम अब मारीच के पूर्व अपराधों को याद कर रहे हैं। वे जानते हैं कि मारीच 'अकृत आत्मना' (जिसका चित्त संस्कारित नहीं है, दुष्ट आत्मा) है और 'नृशंस' (क्रूर) है। बालकाण्ड में विश्वामित्र के यज्ञ के समय भी मारीच ने विघ्न डाला था। श्रीराम तर्क देते हैं कि यदि यह वही मारीच है, तो इसे जीवित छोड़ना ऋषियों के प्रति अन्याय होगा। यह श्लोक लक्ष्मण को यह समझाने के लिए है कि उनका जाना केवल सीता की इच्छा पूर्ति नहीं, बल्कि वन की सुरक्षा के लिए एक आवश्यक सैन्य अभियान भी है।
