Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत् एतत् न भवेत् रक्षो वातापिः इव लक्ष्मण ।
मत् विधम् यो अतिमन्येत धर्म नित्यम् जितेन्द्रियम् ॥३-४३-४५॥
tat etat na bhavet rakṣo vātāpiḥ iva lakṣmaṇa |
mat vidham yo atimanyeta dharma nityam jitendriyam ॥3-43-45॥
Translation
O Lakshmana! This Rakshasa (Mareecha) shall not exist, just like Vatapi, if he disregards one like me who is ever devoted to Dharma and self-controlled.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! जो (मुझ जैसे) नित्य धर्मपरायण और जितेन्द्रिय पुरुष का अपमान (अतिक्रमण) करेगा, वह यह राक्षस (मारीच) भी वातापि की तरह जीवित नहीं बचेगा।
English Commentary
Rama draws a parallel between himself and Sage Agastya. He asserts his own qualifications as 'dharma nityam' (eternally grounded in righteousness) and 'jitendriyam' (master of senses). He argues that just as Vatapi could not survive Agastya, Mareecha cannot survive a confrontation with him. The verse is a declaration of invincibility based on moral standing. Rama validates Lakshmana's fear that the deer is a demon but reframes it as an opportunity to destroy evil, thereby justifying his decision to pursue the creature.

श्रीराम यहाँ अपनी तुलना महर्षि अगस्त्य से करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि मैं 'धर्म नित्यम्' (सदा धर्म में स्थित) और 'जितेन्द्रियम्' (इन्द्रियों को जीतने वाला) हूँ। यदि मारीच ने मुझे धोखा देने का प्रयास किया, तो उसकी गति भी वातापि जैसी होगी। यहाँ श्रीराम का आत्म-विश्वास झलकता है। वे लक्ष्मण की शंका (कि यह राक्षस है) को स्वीकार करते हुए भी यह सुनिश्चित करते हैं कि परिणाम राक्षस की मृत्यु ही होगा। यह श्लोक यह भी स्पष्ट करता है कि श्रीराम अपनी आध्यात्मिक शक्ति और नैतिक बल के प्रति सचेत हैं।
