चरन्तो मृगयाम् हृष्टाः पापेन उपाधिना वने ।
अनेन निहता राम राजानः काम रूपिणा ॥ ॥३-४३-६॥
Carantau mṛgayām hr̥ṣṭāḥ pāpena upādhinā vane । Anena nihatā Rāma rājānaḥ kāma rūpiṇā ॥ ॥3-43-6॥
Translation
O Rama, many kings who were happily hunting in the forest were killed by this shape-shifter through wicked and deceitful tricks.

हे राम! पहले भी वन में आनंदपूर्वक शिकार करते हुए अनेक राजा इस स्वेच्छानुसार रूप बदलने वाले राक्षस द्वारा पापपूर्ण छल से मारे जा चुके हैं।
English Commentary
Lakshmana substantiates his suspicion by recalling Maricha’s past notoriety. He reminds Rama that this kāma rūpiṇā (shape-shifter) has historically used pāpena upādhinā (wicked deceit) to kill many rājānaḥ (kings) who were hr̥ṣṭāḥ (happily) engaged in hunting. The argument is strategic: this deer is a trap designed to appeal to the martial instinct of a king. Lakshmana establishes that the object is not a marvel of nature, but a historically lethal stratagem.
