व्यनदत् भैरवम् नादम् धरण्याम् अल्प जीवितः ।
म्रियमाणः तु मारीचो जहौ ताम् कृत्रिमाम् तनुम् ॥ ॥३-४४-१७॥

Translation
Falling onto the earth with very little life remaining, the dying Maricha let out a terrifying roar and abandoned that artificial body.

धरती पर गिरकर, बहुत कम प्राण शेष रहने पर, मरते हुए मारीच ने भयानक नाद (गर्जना) किया और उस कृत्रिम (मृग) शरीर को त्याग दिया।
English Commentary
This verse captures the dissolution of the illusion. The terms alpa jīvitaḥ (scant life remaining) and mriyamāṇaḥ (dying) emphasize the finality of Rama's strike. In his final moments, Maricha emits a bhairavam nādam (terrifying roar), which contrasts sharply with the gentle, alluring appearance of the golden deer he had projected earlier. Crucially, the verse states he abandoned the kṛtrimām tanum (artificial body). This aligns with the epic's metaphysical stance that illusion (Maya) cannot sustain itself in the face of death or the ultimate truth represented by Rama's arrow. The forced return to his original form signifies the end of the deception regarding his identity, though the deception regarding his voice (which follows next) is about to begin. It marks the transition from the allure of the deer to the horror of the Rakshasa.

यह श्लोक उस क्षण का वर्णन करता है जब राम का बाण लगते ही माया का पर्दा हट जाता है। 'अल्प जीवितः' (जिसके प्राण बहुत कम बचे हैं) और 'म्रियमाणः' (मरते हुए) शब्द मारीच की अंतिम अवस्था को दर्शाते हैं। मरते समय उसने 'भैरवम् नादम्' (भयानक आवाज) की, जो उसकी राक्षसी प्रकृति के अनुकूल थी। यहाँ महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि उसने अपनी 'कृत्रिमाम् तनुम्' (बनावटी शरीर) को त्याग दिया। यह वाल्मीकि रामायण का एक महत्वपूर्ण सिद्धांत है कि मृत्यु के समय सत्य प्रकट हो जाता है; कोई भी मायावी रूप मृत्यु की पीड़ा और अंतिम सत्य के सामने टिक नहीं पाता। मारीच का मृग रूप केवल छल के लिए था, और जैसे ही प्राण निकलने लगे, वह अपने वास्तविक, वीभत्स स्वरूप में लौटने लगा। यह घटना राम के मन में संदेह की पुष्टि करती है कि यह कोई साधारण मृग नहीं था।
