मारीचस्य तु माय एषा पूर्व उक्तम् लक्ष्मणेन तु ।
तत् तदा हि अभवत् च अद्य मारीचो अयम् मया हतः ॥ ॥३-४४-२३॥
mārīcasya tu māya eṣā pūrva uktam lakṣmaṇena tu । tat tadā hi abhavat ca adya mārīco ayam mayā hataḥ ॥ ॥3-44-23॥
Translation
(Rama thought) "Lakshmana had indeed said earlier that this is the illusion of Maricha. That has now turned out to be true; this Maricha has been killed by me today."

(राम ने सोचा) "लक्ष्मण ने पहले ही कहा था कि यह मारीच की माया है। वह बात अब सच हो गई है; आज मैंने उसी मारीच को मारा है।"
English Commentary
Rama engages in an internal verification of events. He acknowledges that the specific warning given by Lakshmana—mārīcasya tu māya eṣā (this is indeed Maricha's illusion)—was accurate. The phrase tat tadā hi abhavat (that has indeed happened/become true) confirms the validation of Lakshmana's wisdom. Rama notes, mārīco ayam mayā hataḥ (this Maricha has been killed by me), but the context implies a heavy heart. The realization isn't just about the identity of the deer, but about the strategic error of ignoring Lakshmana's counsel. It establishes the tragic irony that the "Golden Deer" was exactly what Lakshmana feared, and Rama's success in the hunt is actually the success of Ravana's distraction tactic.
