लक्ष्मणः च महाबाहुः काम् अवस्थाम् गमिष्यति ।
इति संचिन्त्य धर्माअत्मा रामो हृष्ट तनू रुहः ॥ ॥३-४४-२५॥
lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahābāhuḥ kām avasthām gamiṣyati । iti saṃcintya dharmāatmā rāmo hṛṣṭa tanū ruhaḥ ॥ ॥3-44-25॥
Translation
And what state will the mighty-armed Lakshmana fall into? Thinking this, the righteous Rama's hair stood on end.

और महाबाहु लक्ष्मण की क्या दशा होगी? ऐसा सोचकर धर्मात्मा राम के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए।
English Commentary
Rama’s anxiety extends to his brother. He wonders what avasthām (state/situation) the mahābāhuḥ (mighty-armed) Lakshmana will be driven into. Rama knows Lakshmana is emotionally steady, but the pressure from a panicked Sita might be overwhelming. The physical reaction described is hṛṣṭa tanū ruhaḥ (hair standing on end). While often denoting joy, in this context of bhayam (fear/danger), it signifies a visceral shudder of dread or shock (horripilation). Rama, the dharmātmā (righteous soul), senses a violation of dharma approaching—likely the breaking of the protective boundary around Sita or Lakshmana being forced to leave his post. The physical manifestation of his anxiety underscores the severity of the situation.

सीता के बाद राम को लक्ष्मण की चिंता होती है। 'काम् अवस्थाम् गमिष्यति' (किस अवस्था को प्राप्त होंगे)—राम जानते हैं कि लक्ष्मण विवेकवान हैं, लेकिन सीता के आदेश या विलाप के सामने वे धर्मसंकट में पड़ सकते हैं। 'हृष्ट तनू रुहः' (रोमांचित शरीर वाले/रोंगटे खड़े होना) एक बहुत ही प्रबल मुहावरा है। साहित्य में अक्सर यह हर्ष के लिए प्रयोग होता है, लेकिन यहाँ यह 'भय' और 'अतिशय चिंता' (extreme anxiety) का सूचक है। राम एक 'धर्मात्मा' हैं, वे जानते हैं कि लक्ष्मण का धर्म उनकी रक्षा करना है, लेकिन सीता की रक्षा भी धर्म है। इस धर्म-संकट की कल्पना मात्र से राम के शरीर में सिहरन दौड़ गई। उन्हें अनहोनी का पूर्वाभास हो गया था।
