Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तम् वंचयानो राजेन्द्रम् आपतन्तम् निरीक्ष्य वै ।
बभूव अंतर्हितः त्रासात् पुनः संदर्शने अभवत् ॥३-४४-३॥
tam vañcayāno rājendram āpatantam nirīkṣya vai |
babhūva antarhitaḥ trāsāt punaḥ saṃdarśane abhavat ॥3-44-3॥
Translation
Seeing that King of Kings (Rama) approaching, the deer, deceiving him, would hide out of fear and then become visible again.

उस राजेन्द्र (श्रीराम) को अपनी ओर आते देख, वह (मृग) उन्हें ठगने (ललचाकर दूर ले जाने) के उद्देश्य से, कभी भय से छिप जाता (अन्तर्हित) और फिर पुनः दिखाई देने लगता।
English Commentary
The strategic deception begins. Mareecha, in the guise of the deer, sees Rama approaching and employs "bait and switch" tactics. He acts 'vanchayano' (deceivingly). He feigns fear ('trasat') and hides ('antarhita'), only to reappear ('punah sandarshane') just as Rama might lose interest or track. This intermittent visibility was designed to lure Rama deeper into the forest, away from Sita and Lakshmana. It was a calculated psychological game to exploit the hunter's instinct to chase a fleeing prey.

मारीच ने अपनी मायावी चालें शुरू कर दीं। उसका उद्देश्य 'वंचयानो' (धोखा देना/ठगना) था। वह श्रीराम को आश्रम से दूर ले जाना चाहता था। इसलिए वह कभी 'त्रासात्' (डर का नाटक करके) छिप जाता और जब श्रीराम उसे ढूँढने लगते, तो 'पुनः संदर्शने अभवत्' (फिर से प्रकट हो जाता)। यह लुका-छिपी का खेल श्रीराम की उत्सुकता और क्रोध दोनों को बढ़ा रहा था। मारीच बहुत चतुराई से श्रीराम को गहरे वन की ओर खींच रहा था।
