अवेक्ष्य अवेक्ष्य धावन्तम् धनुष् पाणिः महावने ।
अतिवृत्तम् इषोः पातात् लोभयानम् कदाचन ॥३-४४-५॥
Avekṣya avekṣya dhāvantam dhanuṣ pāṇiḥ mahāvane |
Ativṛttam iṣoḥ pātāt lobhayānam kadācana ॥3-44-5॥
Translation
Holding the bow in his hand, Rama ran in that great forest, keeping his eyes fixed on the deer. At times, the deer would lure him on, running just beyond the range of his arrow shot.

हाथ में धनुष लिए श्रीराम उस महावन में उस (मृग) को देखते हुए उसके पीछे दौड़ रहे थे। वह मृग कभी-कभी उन्हें ललचाते हुए बाण के निशाने से बहुत दूर निकल जाता था।
English Commentary
This verse sets the dynamic of the chase: a deliberate lure. Maricha does not simply flee; he engages in a tactical retreat designed to draw Rama deeper into the forest. The phrase ativṛttam iṣoḥ pātāt (going beyond the fall/range of the arrow) is crucial. It shows Maricha's awareness of Rama's prowess; he maintains a safety zone that is tantalizingly close yet effectively safe. Rama, depicted here as dhanuṣ pāṇiḥ (bow in hand), represents the focused warrior. The commentary suggests a psychological game is at play—the deer is baiting the hunter.
