गन्धर्व नगर प्रख्या माया तस्य च रक्षसः ।
न्यास भूता असि वैदेहि न्यस्ता मयि महात्मना ॥३-४५-१७॥
Gandharva nagara prakhyā māyā tasya ca rakṣasaḥ । Nyāsa bhūtā asi vaidehi nyastā mayi mahātmanā ॥3-45-17॥
Translation
O Vaidehi, this is the illusion of that Rakshasa, resembling a Gandharva-nagara (imaginary city in the sky). You have been entrusted to me as a sacred deposit by the great soul (Rama).

हे वैदेही! वह आवाज उस राक्षस (मारीच) की माया है जो गन्धर्व-नगर (आकाश में दिखने वाले काल्पनिक नगर) के समान मिथ्या है। आप महात्मा राम द्वारा मुझे सौंपी गई धरोहर (न्यास) हैं।
English Commentary
Lakshmana uses the metaphor of "Gandharva Nagara" (a mirage or celestial city formed by clouds) to describe the illusory nature of the Rakshasa's voice—it appears real but has no substance. He appeals to Sita’s sense of duty by reminding her of his own obligation. He refers to her as a "Nyasa" (sacred trust or deposit) left in his care by the "Mahatma" (Great Soul) Rama. In the ethical code of the time, protecting a trust was a supreme duty. Leaving her undefended to chase a mirage would mean violating the direct order of his superior and brother. This verse underscores that Lakshmana is not acting out of stubbornness, but out of strict adherence to the code of honor and loyalty.

लक्ष्मण यहाँ एक बहुत ही सुंदर और गंभीर रूपक का प्रयोग करते हैं। वे उस आवाज को 'गन्धर्व नगर' कहते हैं—अर्थात् बादलों में बना एक ऐसा महल जो दिखता तो है पर जिसका कोई अस्तित्व नहीं होता (मृगतृष्णा समान)। वे सीता को याद दिलाते हैं कि राम ने वन में जाते समय सीता की रक्षा का भार उन्हें सौंपा था। 'न्यास' शब्द का अर्थ है 'अमानत' या 'धरोहर'। धर्मशास्त्रों के अनुसार, धरोहर की रक्षा करना व्यक्ति का परम कर्तव्य होता है, यहाँ तक कि प्राण देकर भी। लक्ष्मण यह तर्क देते हैं कि यदि वे सीता को छोड़कर जाते हैं, तो वे राम के विश्वास और अपने धर्म को भंग करेंगे। यह श्लोक लक्ष्मण की धर्मसंकट और नैतिक बाध्यता को उजागर करता है।
