न हि मे जीवितम् स्थाने हृदयम् वा अवतिष्टते ।
क्रोशतः परम आर्तस्य श्रुतः शब्दो मया भृशम् ॥ ॥३-४५-२॥
na hi me jīvitam sthāne hṛdayam vā avatiṣṭhate । krośataḥ parama ārtasya śrutaḥ śabdo mayā bhṛśam ॥ ॥3-45-2॥
Translation
My life-breath is not stable in its place, nor does my heart remain steady. I have clearly heard the loud cry of one who is screaming in extreme distress.

मेरा जीवन (प्राण) अपने स्थान पर स्थिर नहीं है और न ही मेरा हृदय स्थिर रह पा रहा है। अत्यंत पीड़ा से पुकारते हुए (राम का) वह शब्द मैंने स्पष्ट रूप से सुना है।
English Commentary
This verse captures Sita's visceral panic. The phrase na hi me jīvitam sthāne (my life is not in its place) is a powerful idiom indicating that she feels she is on the verge of death from sheer fright. She describes the voice as parama ārtasya (of one in extreme pain/distress). Her conviction that the cry is authentic overrides all logic. The stability of her heart (hṛdayam vā avatiṣṭhate) is shattered. This moment marks the transition from the protected tranquility of the ashram to chaotic emotional turmoil. It sets the psychological baseline for her subsequent accusations against Lakshmana—she is not acting out of malice, but out of a terror so profound that it destabilizes her being.
