न एव चित्रम् सपत्नेषु पापम् लक्ष्मण यत् भवेत् ।
त्वत् विधेषु नृशंसेषु नित्यम् प्रच्छन्न चारिषु ॥३-४५-२३॥
Na eva citram sapatneṣu pāpam lakṣmaṇa yat bhavet । Tvat vidheṣu nṛśaṃseṣu nityam pracchanna cāriṣu ॥3-45-23॥
Translation
It is no surprise, O Lakshmana, that such sin exists in rivals/enemies like you—cruel men who always act in disguise/secretly.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! यह कोई आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है कि तुम जैसे सौतेले भाइयों (शत्रुओं) में, जो क्रूर और सदा गुप्त रूप से (कपटपूर्ण) आचरण करने वाले होते हैं, ऐसा पाप विद्यमान हो।
English Commentary
Sita classifies Lakshmana as a "Sapatna"—a rival or enemy, invoking the trope of the jealous half-brother (likely alluding to the family politics involving Kaikeyi and Bharata). She declares that it is not surprising for people like him, whom she labels "Pracchanna charishu" (those who wander in disguise/act secretly), to harbor such sinful intentions. She accuses him of being a hypocrite who has been masking his true nature under the guise of service. By calling him cruel ("Nrishamseshu"), she strips away his identity as a loving brother and recasts him as a political rival seizing an opportunity to eliminate the rightful heir. This effectively severs the bond of trust required for him to stay.

सीता यहाँ लक्ष्मण को 'सपत्नेषु' (शत्रु या सौतेला) की श्रेणी में रखती हैं। वे कैकेयी के भरत के प्रति प्रेम और राम के प्रति अन्याय के संदर्भ को अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से जोड़ते हुए कहती हैं कि सौतेले भाइयों में ऐसा पाप होना विचित्र नहीं है। वे लक्ष्मण को 'प्रच्छन्न चारिषु' कहती हैं, जिसका अर्थ है 'छिपकर चलने वाला' या 'कपटी'। सीता का आरोप है कि लक्ष्मण अब तक राम-भक्ति का नाटक कर रहे थे, लेकिन वास्तव में वे कपट-वेश में छिपे हुए शत्रु हैं। यह आरोप लक्ष्मण के लिए असहनीय है क्योंकि उन्होंने राम के लिए राज-पाठ और सुख सब त्याग दिया था। यह श्लोक रामायण के मोड़ पर सीता की मानसिक स्थिति की चरम सीमा को दर्शाता है।
