ताम् आर्त रूपाम् विमना रुदन्तीम्सौमित्रिः आलोक्य विशाल नेत्राम् ।
आश्वासयामास न चैव भर्तुःतम् भ्रातरम् किंचित् उवाच सीता ॥३-४५-३९॥
Tām ārta rūpām vimanā rudantīm saumitriḥ ālokya viśāla netrām । Āśvāsayāmāsa na caiva bhartuḥ tam bhrātaram kiṃcit uvāca sītā ॥3-45-39॥
Translation
Seeing that large-eyed Sita in such a distressed form and weeping, Saumitri (Lakshmana), himself dejected, tried to console her. But Sita spoke nothing to her husband's brother.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस विशाल नेत्रों वाली सीता को आर्त (दुखी) रूप में और रोते हुए देखकर, उदास मन वाले लक्ष्मण (सौमित्र) ने उन्हें सांत्वना देने का प्रयास किया, लेकिन सीता ने अपने पति के उस भाई (लक्ष्मण) से कुछ भी नहीं कहा।
English Commentary
Even at the moment of departure, Lakshmana’s primary concern is Sita’s well-being. Despite being insulted, he sees her 'arta rupam' (distressed form) and instinctively tries to comfort her. He is 'vimana' (dispirited/distracted) not just by the insults, but by her pain. However, Sita’s response is a stony silence. She refuses to speak to her 'bhartur bhrataram' (husband's brother). This silence acts as the final severance of their connection. It implies she is steadfast in her demand and refuses to engage further until he leaves. It creates a painful tableau where Lakshmana’s grace meets Sita’s rigid resolve, leaving him no option but to turn away.

लक्ष्मण का हृदय करुणा से भरा है। सीता के कटु वचनों के बावजूद, जब वे सीता को रोते हुए देखते हैं, तो वे 'विमना' (विमन/उदास) हो जाते हैं। वे अपने अपमान को भूलकर सीता को 'आश्वासयामास' (सांत्वना) देते हैं, जो उनकी महानता का परिचायक है। किन्तु सीता की प्रतिक्रिया 'मौन' है। वे लक्ष्मण से 'किंचित् उवाच' (कुछ भी नहीं बोलीं)। यह मौन बहुत भारी है। यह दर्शाता है कि सीता का क्रोध या तो अब भी शांत नहीं हुआ है, या वे इतनी अधिक शोक में हैं कि बात करने की स्थिति में नहीं हैं। लक्ष्मण द्वारा अंतिम बार सांत्वना देने का प्रयास भी विफल रहता है, जिससे उनकी विदाई और भी अधिक विषादपूर्ण हो जाती है।
