तेन तिष्ठसि विस्रब्धः तम् अपश्यन् महाद्युतिम् ।
किम् हि संशयम् आपन्ने तस्मिन् इह मया भवेत् ॥ ॥३-४५-८॥
tena tiṣṭhasi visrabdhaḥ tam apaśyan mahādyutim । kim hi saṃśayam āpanne tasmin iha mayā bhavet ॥ ॥3-45-8॥
Translation
That is why you stand there calmly, not seeing that resplendent one. If he has fallen into danger, what is the use of me being here?

इसीलिए उस महातेजस्वी (राम) को न देखते हुए भी तुम निश्चिंत खड़े हो। उनके संकट में पड़ने पर मेरा यहाँ क्या काम (या मैं कैसे जीवित रह सकती हूँ)?
English Commentary
Sita interprets Lakshmana's composure (visrabdhaḥ) as apathy. She cannot comprehend how he can remain calm while the mahādyutim (greatly resplendent Rama) is missing. Her rhetorical question—"What use is there of me here if he is in danger?"—cuts to the logic of the situation from her perspective. She implies that her existence is contingent upon Rama's. Therefore, guarding her while Rama dies is a futile exercise. She is trying to shift Lakshmana's priority from "guarding Sita" to "saving the one who gives Sita's life meaning."

सीता लक्ष्मण की शांति ('विस्रब्धः' - शांत/निश्चिंत) पर प्रश्न उठाती हैं। उन्हें लगता है कि राम जैसे 'महाद्युतिम्' (महातेजस्वी) व्यक्ति के न दिखने पर लक्ष्मण का शांत रहना षड्यंत्र का प्रमाण है। श्लोक के दूसरे भाग का अर्थ बहुत गहरा है। 'किम् हि... मया भवेत्'—इसका अर्थ है कि यदि राम नहीं रहे, तो मेरा जीवन व्यर्थ है। सीता यह स्पष्ट कर रही हैं कि राम के बिना उनका अस्तित्व असंभव है, इसलिए लक्ष्मण का उन्हें बचाने के लिए (सीता की रक्षा के लिए) यहाँ रुकना व्यर्थ है। यदि राम ही नहीं बचेंगे, तो सीता को बचाकर क्या होगा? यह तर्क लक्ष्मण को यह समझाने के लिए है कि प्राथमिक कर्तव्य राम की रक्षा है, सीता की नहीं।
