कर्तव्यम् इह तिष्ठन्त्या यत् प्रधानः त्वम् आगतः ।
एवम् ब्रुवाणम् वैदेहीम् बाष्प शोक समन्वितम् ॥ ॥३-४५-९॥

"What duty is served by me staying here, when he for whom you came as a follower (is in danger)?" To Vaidehi, who was speaking thus, filled with tears and grief...

"जिन (राम) के प्रधान (सेवक) बनकर तुम आए हो, (उनके न रहने पर) यहाँ रहते हुए मेरा क्या कर्तव्य शेष रह जाता है?" आंसुओं और शोक से युक्त वैदेही (सीता) को इस प्रकार बोलते हुए... (देखकर लक्ष्मण बोले)।
English Commentary
Sita concludes her argument with an existential point. Lakshmana came to the forest primarily for Rama (yat pradhānaḥ tvam āgataḥ). If Rama is lost, the mission fails, and her safety becomes irrelevant. She is described as bāṣpa śoka samanvitam (filled with tears and grief), which softens the harshness of her previous words for the audience—she is speaking from a place of overwhelming sorrow, not malice. The narrative now shifts focus to Lakshmana, setting the stage for his defense against these terrible accusations.
