दृष्ट्वा काम शर आविद्धो ब्रह्म घोषम् उदीरयन् ।
अब्रवीत् प्रश्रितम् वाक्यम् रहिते राक्षस अधिपः ॥ ॥३-४६-१४॥
Dṛṣṭvā kāma śara āviddho brahma ghoṣam udīrayan । Abravīt praśritam vākyam rahite rākṣasa adhipaḥ ॥ ॥3-46-14॥
Translation
Seeing her, pierced by the arrows of Kama (Lust), the King of Demons, while uttering Vedic chants, spoke polite words to her in that solitary place.

उन्हें देखकर कामदेव के बाणों से घायल (काम-पीड़ित) उस राक्षसराज ने, वेद मंत्रों (ब्रह्म घोष) का उच्चारण करते हुए, उस एकांत स्थान में (सीता से) विनम्रतापूर्वक ये वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This verse perfectly captures the dichotomy of Ravana’s disguise. Internally, he is Kama shara aviddo (pierced by the arrows of Cupid/Lust), driven by primal desire. Externally, he is Brahma ghosham udirayan (chanting the sound of Brahma/Vedas), projecting the image of a holy sage. He speaks prashritam (humble/polite) words, masking his arrogance and intent. The juxtaposition of holy chanting and unholy lust illustrates the depth of his deception. He utilizes the rahite (solitude) of the hermitage to initiate his trap.

यह श्लोक रावण के पाखंड की पराकाष्ठा है। वह 'काम शर आविद्धो' है, अर्थात कामवासना से पूरी तरह ग्रस्त है, फिर भी मुख से 'ब्रह्म घोषम्' (वेद मंत्र) उच्चारित कर रहा है। यह एक धूर्त बहरूपिये का लक्षण है जो अपनी वासना को धर्म की आड़ में छिपाता है। उसने 'प्रश्रितम् वाक्यम्' (विनम्र वचन) बोले, जो उसकी कूटनीति का हिस्सा है ताकि सीता को भय न हो और वह उसे एक सम्मानित ब्राह्मण समझें। 'रहिते' शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है, जो दर्शाता है कि उसने बात करने के लिए वह समय चुना जब वहां कोई और रक्षक मौजूद नहीं था।
