का त्वम् कांचन वर्ण आभे पीत कौशेय वासिनि ।
कमलानाम् शुभाम् मालाम् पद्मिनी इव च बिभ्रती ॥ ॥३-४६-१६॥
Kā tvam kāñcana varṇa ābhe pīta kauśeya vāsini । Kamalānām śubhām mālāml padminī iva ca bibhratī ॥ ॥3-46-16॥
Translation
(Ravana spoke): Who are you, O one with a golden complexion, clad in yellow silk? You appear like a lotus pond bearing a beautiful garland of lotuses.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(रावण बोला): सुवर्ण के समान कांति वाली! पीली रेशमी साड़ी पहनने वाली! तुम कौन हो? तुम कमलों की शुभ माला धारण की हुई कमलिनी (कमल के तालाब) के समान लग रही हो।
English Commentary
Ravana initiates the conversation with flattery disguised as inquiry. He addresses her by her physical attributes: Kanchana varna abhe (shining with the color of gold). This confirms that Sita’s complexion was radiant and golden. The comparison to a Padmini (a lotus pool/plant) suggests freshness, fragrance, and beauty. By asking "Who are you?", he feigns ignorance of her identity, playing the role of an inquisitive wandering ascetic who is struck by the incongruity of such a beautiful woman in a dangerous forest.

यहाँ से रावण का संवाद (कथोपयकथन) आरंभ होता है। वह सीता के 'कांचन वर्ण' (सोने जैसे रंग) और 'पीत कौशेय' (पीले वस्त्र) की ओर संकेत करता है, जो यह बताता है कि तपस्विनी के वेश में भी उनकी राजसी आभा छिपी नहीं है। 'पद्मिनी इव' (कमलिनी के समान) की उपमा देकर रावण उनके सौंदर्य को प्राकृतिक और मादक बताता है। वह एक अजनबी संन्यासी के रूप में प्रश्न पूछता है "का त्वम्" (तुम कौन हो?), ताकि बातचीत शुरू की जा सके और उनका परिचय प्राप्त किया जा सके।
