करान्तमित मध्या असि सुकेशी संहत स्तनी ।
न एव देवी न गन्धर्वी न यक्षी न च किंनरी ॥ ॥३-४६-२२॥
Karāntamita madhyā asi sukeśī saṃhata stanī । Na eva devī na gandharvī na yakṣī na ca kiṃnarī ॥ ॥3-46-22॥
Translation
Your waist is so slender it could be spanned by a hand; you possess beautiful hair and firm, close-set breasts. You are neither a Goddess, nor a Gandharvi, nor a Yakshi, nor a Kinnari (for you surpass them all).
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम्हारी कमर इतनी पतली है कि मुट्ठी में समा जाए (कर-अन्त-मित), तुम्हारे केश सुंदर हैं और तुम्हारे वक्षस्थल आपस में सटे हुए हैं। तुम न तो (साधारण) देवी हो, न गंधर्व स्त्री, न यक्षी और न ही किन्नरी हो (तुम इन सबसे श्रेष्ठ हो)।
English Commentary
Ravana employs hyperbole to flatter Sita, describing her waist as karantamita (measurable within the grasp of a hand), a classic trope in Sanskrit poetics denoting an idealized hourglass figure. By stating she is neither a Goddess, Gandharvi, Yakshi, nor Kinnari, he uses the rhetorical device of vyatireka (distinction). He implies she is not merely one of these celestial beings but something unique that transcends them all. This flattery is calculated to feed a sense of superiority, suggesting that such a transcending beauty is wasted on the mortal plane of the forest.
