भर्तारम् च वरम् मन्ये त्वत् युक्तम् असितेक्षणे ।
का त्वम् भवसि रुद्राणाम् मरुताम् वा शुचिस्मिते ॥ ॥३-४६-२७॥
Bhartāram ca varam manye tvat yuktam asitekṣaṇe । Kā tvam bhavasi rudrāṇām marutām vā śucismite ॥ ॥3-46-27॥
Translation
O dark-eyed one! I consider that you deserve a superior husband, one worthy of you. O one with a pure smile! Who are you? Do you belong to the Rudras or the Maruts?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे काले नेत्रों वाली (असितेक्षणे)! मैं मानता हूँ कि तुम्हें (वर्तमान पति से) कोई श्रेष्ठ पति मिलना चाहिए जो तुम्हारे योग्य हो। हे पवित्र मुस्कान वाली! तुम कौन हो? क्या तुम रुद्रों या मरुद्गणों में से किसी की (पत्नी) हो?
English Commentary
Here, Ravana subtly insinuates that Sita’s current husband is inadequate. By saying he thinks she deserves a Varam bhartaram (superior/better husband), he plants the seed of dissatisfaction. He implies that a husband who drags such a beauty into a monster-infested forest is unworthy. He continues the divine associations, asking if she belongs to the Rudras or Maruts (classes of Vedic deities), reinforcing the idea that she belongs in a celestial or royal setting, not a hermitage.

यह अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण श्लोक है। रावण पहली बार परोक्ष रूप से राम (सीता के वर्तमान पति) की निंदा करता है और प्रस्ताव रखता है। 'भर्तारम् च वरम् मन्ये' का अर्थ है "मेरे विचार से तुम्हें (इससे) बेहतर पति मिलना चाहिए।" वह सीता की स्थिति देखकर अनुमान लगाता है कि उसका पति उसे सुख नहीं दे पा रहा। साथ ही, वह पूछता है कि क्या वह रुद्रों या मरुतों (देवताओं) की पत्नी है? 'शुचिस्मिते' (पवित्र मुस्कान) का प्रयोग कर वह अपनी बातों को मृदु बनाए रखता है ताकि सीता उसके अपमानजनक सुझाव पर क्रोधित न हो जाएं।
