The swift Godavari river slows down to a 'stimitam' (still/quiet) flow solely out of 'bhayat' (fear). This personification of nature underscores Ravana's terrifying reputation. The verse reiterates Ravana's motivation: he is 'prepsuh' (desiring/seeking) the 'antaram' (lapse/absence) of Rama. He is an opportunist who strikes only when the divine protector is absent. The repetition of 'antara' emphasizes that this tragic event is defined by the gap in protection, a gap created by Maricha's illusion and Sita's words.
