Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अष्टा दश हि वर्षाणि मम जन्मनि गण्यते ।
राम इति प्रथितो लोके सत्यवान् शीलवान् शुचिः ॥३-४७-११॥
Aṣṭā daśa hi varṣāṇi mama janmani gaṇyate । Rāma iti prathito loke satyavān śīlavān śuciḥ ॥3-47-11॥
Translation
Eighteen years were counted from my birth (I was eighteen years old). He is renowned in the world by the name 'Rama', and he is truthful, of excellent character, and pure.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वनवास के समय) मेरे जन्म से लेकर अब तक अठारह वर्ष गिने गए थे (अर्थात् मेरी आयु १८ वर्ष थी)। वे (मेरे पति) लोक में 'राम' नाम से प्रसिद्ध हैं, और वे सत्यवान, शीलवान तथा पवित्र आचरण वाले हैं।
English Commentary
Sita continues the biographical account by stating her own age at the time of exile: eighteen years. This explicit mention serves to highlight the tragedy of the situation—a newly married couple, in the prime of their youth (25 and 18), being cast out into the wilderness. It evokes a sense of pathos (Karuna Rasa). For an eighteen-year-old princess, accustomed to the comforts of Janaka’s and Dasaratha’s palaces, the resolve to accompany her husband into a forest inhabited by demons is a testament to her strength and devotion.

इस श्लोक में सीता जी अपनी आयु और श्री राम के गुणों का परिचय देती हैं। वे स्पष्ट करती हैं कि वनवास के समय उनकी आयु अठारह वर्ष थी। पिछले श्लोक के साथ मिलाकर देखें, तो राम और सीता के बीच सात वर्ष का अंतर था। इतनी कम आयु में महलों का सुख त्यागकर वन के कष्टों को अपनाने का निर्णय सीता के असाधारण पतिव्रत धर्म और साहस का परिचायक है। १८ वर्ष की एक नवयुवती का वन में राक्षसों के बीच रहने का निर्णय सामान्य नहीं था।
