अवसज्य शिलाम् कण्ठे समुद्रम् तर्तुम् इच्छसि।
सूर्या चन्द्रमसौ च उभौ प्राणिभ्याम् हर्तुम् इच्छसि ॥३-४७-४२॥
Avasajya śilām kaṇṭhe samudram tartum icchasi । Sūryā candramasau ca ubhau prāṇibhyām hartum icchasi ॥3-47-42॥
Translation
"(Desiring me is like) you wishing to cross the ocean with a stone tied to your neck, or wishing to catch both the Sun and the Moon with your bare hands."

"(राम की पत्नी को चाहना वैसा ही है जैसे) तुम गले में भारी पत्थर बाँधकर समुद्र तैरना चाहते हो, या सूर्य और चन्द्रमा दोनों को अपने हाथों से पकड़ना चाहते हो।"
English Commentary
Sita uses the metaphor of sinking. Trying to cross the ocean with a rock tied to the neck (avasajya śilām kaṇṭhe) guarantees drowning. Sita implies she is that heavy burden. By abducting her, Ravana is not gaining a trophy; he is tying a weight of sin to his neck that will drag him and his kingdom to the bottom of the ocean. She also mocks his reach: trying to grab the Sun and Moon (Sūryā candramasau) with human hands. This highlights the gap between Ravana's ambition and his capability. He is trying to appropriate cosmic forces (Rama and Sita) that are far beyond his demonic jurisdiction.

सीता जी रावण की बुद्धि पर प्रहार करती हैं। 'अवसज्य शिलाम् कण्ठे'—गले में पत्थर बाँधकर तैरना डूबने का सुनिश्चित तरीका है। सीता वह 'शिला' (पत्थर) हैं जो रावण के गले (लंकारूपी अस्तित्व) में बंध जाएंगी और उसे भवसागर में डुबो देंगी। यह लंका के विनाश की भविष्यवाणी है। 'सूर्या चन्द्रमसौ... हर्तुम्'—सूर्य (तेज) और चंद्रमा (सौंदर्य) को हाथ से पकड़ना असंभव है। राम सूर्य हैं और सीता चंद्रमा (या इसके विपरीत, दोनों एक दूसरे के पूरक हैं)। रावण इन दिव्य शक्तियों को अपनी राक्षसी पकड़ में लेना चाहता है, जो प्रकृति के नियमों के विरुद्ध है। यह श्लोक रावण के अहंकार की विशालता और उसकी योजना की निरर्थकता को दर्शाता है।
