ताम् वेपमानाम् उपलक्ष्य सीताम् स रावणो मृत्यु सम प्रभावः ।
कुलम् बलम् नाम च कर्म च आत्मनः समाचचक्षे भय कारण अर्थम् ॥ ॥३-४७-५०॥
Tām vepamānām upalakṣya sītām sa rāvaṇo mṛtyu sama prabhāvaḥ । Kulam balam nāma ca karma ca ātmanaḥ samācacakṣe bhaya kāraṇa artham ॥ ॥3-47-50॥
Translation
Seeing Sita trembling in that manner, Ravana, who possessed the power of Death itself, began to proclaim his lineage, strength, name, and deeds for the purpose of instilling fear.

सीता को उस प्रकार कांपते हुए देखकर, मृत्यु के समान प्रभावशाली उस रावण ने उन्हें (और अधिक) भयभीत करने के उद्देश्य से अपने कुल, बल, नाम और कर्मों का वर्णन करना आरम्भ किया।
English Commentary
Observing Sita’s trembling, Ravana seizes the moment to assert dominance. He is described as having the impact of Death (mrityu sama prabhava). Recognizing that his guise as a mendicant has failed to win her over and that she is physically shaken by fear/anger, he decides to amplify that fear (bhaya karana artham) to break her will. He switches tactics to intimidation by formally announcing his identity. He lists his kula (lineage), balam (power), nama (name), and karma (deeds). This transition marks the end of the deception phase; Ravana now believes that the overwhelming weight of his reputation and genealogy will force Sita into submission where deceit could not.

रावण एक कुशल राजनीतिज्ञ और मनोवैज्ञानिक भी है। जब उसने देखा कि सीता 'वेपमानाम्' (कांप रही हैं), तो उसने समझ लिया कि साम, दाम या भेद की बजाय अब 'दंड' या भय का प्रयोग करना उचित है। वह अभी तक एक संन्यासी के वेश में था, लेकिन अब वह अपने वास्तविक, भयानक स्वरूप का परिचय देना चाहता है ताकि सीता भय से ही समर्पण कर दें। वह 'मृत्यु सम प्रभावः' (काल के समान) है। वह अपने 'कुल' (पुलस्त्य वंश), 'बल' (शक्ति), 'नाम' (रावण) और 'कर्म' (दिग्विजय) का बखान करता है। उसका उद्देश्य प्रेम निवेदन नहीं, बल्कि आतंक उत्पन्न करना है। यह श्लोक उस क्षण को दर्शाता है जब मुखौटा उतरने वाला है और राक्षस अपनी असली पहचान बताने जा रहा है।
