Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
भ्राता वैश्रवणस्य अहम् सापत्नो वरवर्णिनि ।
रावणो नाम भद्रम् ते दशग्रीवः प्रतापवान् ॥ ॥३-४८-२॥
Bhrātā vaiśravaṇasya aham sāpatno varavarṇini । Rāvaṇo nāma bhadram te daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān ॥ ॥3-48-2॥
Translation
O beautiful lady! I am the step-brother of Vaishravana (Kubera). My name is Ravana. May good betide you! I am the ten-necked one, possessor of great might.

हे सुंदरी! मैं कुबेर (वैश्रवण) का सौतेला भाई हूँ। मेरा नाम रावण है। तुम्हारा कल्याण हो! मैं दस सिरों वाला अत्यंत प्रभावशाली राक्षस हूँ।
English Commentary
Ravana formally introduces himself, anchoring his identity in his prestigious lineage as the step-brother (sapatno bhrata) of Vaishravana (Kubera, the Lord of Wealth). This immediately establishes him not as a common demon, but as a being of celestial origin. He reveals his name, Ravana, and his iconic epithet, Dashagriva (Ten-Necked). Interestingly, he interjects "bhadram te" (may you be blessed/safe), a customary polite phrase that seems jarring amidst his intimidation, perhaps a lingering habit of his disguise or a twisted form of courtship. Addressing Sita as Varavarnini (woman of excellent complexion), he asserts his pratapa (valour/splendour), demanding recognition of his status.
