Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्ता तु वैदेही क्रुद्धा संरक्त लोचना ।
अब्रवीत् परुषम् वाक्यम् रहिते राक्षस अधिपम् ॥ ॥३-४८-२०॥
evam uktā tu vaidehī kruddhā saṃrakta locanā । abravīt paruṣam vākyam rahite rākṣasa adhipam ॥ ॥3-48-20॥
Translation
Upon being addressed thus, Vaidehi became enraged. With eyes bloodshot, she spoke harsh words to the Lord of Rakshasas in that solitary place.
हिंदी अनुवाद
रावण के ऐसा कहने पर वैदेही (सीता) अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गईं। उनकी आँखें लाल हो गईं और उस एकांत स्थान में उन्होंने राक्षसराज से कठोर वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This verse marks a pivotal shift in Sita’s demeanor from distress to righteous fury. The descriptor samrakta lochana (red-eyed) signifies intense anger, a trait often associated with warriors, reminding the audience that Sita is a Kshatriya princess. Despite being in a solitary place (rahite) and physically vulnerable against a powerful adversary, she does not cower. Instead, she meets Ravana's arrogance with "harsh words," demonstrating her immense moral courage and the protective power of her chastity (pativrata).

यहाँ सीता के चरित्र का एक उग्र और तेजस्वी रूप सामने आता है। अब तक वह एक साधारण तपस्विनी दिख रही थीं, किन्तु रावण के अधर्मी प्रस्ताव को सुनकर उनका 'क्षत्रिय रक्त' उबल पड़ता है। 'संरक्त लोचना' (लाल आँखें) उनके भीषण क्रोध का परिचायक है। यद्यपि वह एकांत ('रहिते') में थीं और असहाय थीं, फिर भी उन्होंने भयभीत होने के बजाय 'परुषम् वाक्यम्' (कठोर वचन) कहकर रावण का डटकर सामना किया। यह श्लोक सीता के निर्भीक सतीत्व और आत्मबल को रेखांकित करता है।
